DCU’s Body and Soul week hopes to help students develop a positive self-image through events centred around body confidence and mindfulness.
The first ever Body and Soul week takes place in DCU from February 19th to 23rd across the Glasnevin and St. Patrick’s campuses. The week is dedicated to building self-esteem, celebrating ourselves and ultimately challenging self-doubt.
The week-long event is organised by the SU alongside various clubs and societies. Events taking place throughout the week include the drag workshop with the LGBT society, dogs on the St Patrick’s campus, pilates workshops with dance society and free iron and BMI testing in the campus chemist.
All events are focused on a celebration of the body and feeling comfortable in your own skin.
The aim of the week is to make students aware that a person’s self-esteem plays a key role in maintaining mental health. VP for Welfare and Equality Podge Henry says the main focus of the week is to “encourage students to love their body and be comfortable in the skin they’re in”.
The biggest initiative for the week is the “No like selfie” campaign which is encouraging students to post selfies with the caption “Don’t like this selfie” to highlight that you don’t need likes to feel confident about your body.
The importance of campaigns like this in universities cannot be denied as it brings together societies and the student body in an effort to work towards a positive goal.
Events taking place throughout the week can be found on the Students’ Union Facebook page.
