American football shirts, drag queens and burlesque dancers were just a few of the sights about campus last week as Freshers’ Week made its return to DCU.
Both new and returning students had a jam-packed social life during the week with a range of lively events on throughout.
A sold-out Freshers’ Ball, organised by the Students’ Union, was the primary event as students donned the stars and stripes for the ‘Welcome Home J1 Party’ last Wednesday. The Hub was transformed into all things American, with the Statue of Liberty even making a grand appearance.
Grammy-nominated artist Coolio headlined the night and entertained the crowd with well-known hits such as ‘Gangstas Paradise’ and ‘Aw Here it Goes’, theme song of the infamous 90s show ‘Kenan and Kel’. The night also included a Deadmau5 tribute, Daft Funk, a silent disco and exotic burlesque dancers.
Former DCU student and comedian, Neil Delamere, returned to DCU to entertain the masses last Tuesday evening. With his sharp wit and hilarious takes on everyday events, Delamere proved to be a big hit with students in the Venue. His audience interaction was particularly well received, with some brave souls in the front rows adding comic value to the night.
Day-time events during the week included Esoc’s ‘Iron Stomach’ competition which took place last Tuesday afternoon in the Venue. With a menu that included reliable delicacies such as salad cream, marmite and soy sauce, the brave contestants were put through their paces. Challenges included drinking through a dirty sock, eating ‘blue waffle’ and drinking two litres of milk through a beer bong.
Due to great demand, Granny Bingo returned last Thursday night hosted by none other than the great Victoria’s Secret. A range of prizes were up for grabs, with the eventual winner scooping the top prize of €100. The busy week was rounded off with a Fresher’s Fry on Friday which proved the best way to recover from such a busy week. Overall, the week was received well amongst students with security reporting no issues of anti-social behaviour.
