DCU’s Ashbourne camogie team succumbed to an eight-point defeat at the hands of University of Ulster, Jordanstown on Wednesday night, October 14th in St Clare’s. The home side were looking to make it two wins from two in their league campaign following a great win over UCD in the first round on a score line of 2-16 to 2-13 but were just outclassed by the northern side.
Right from the throw in UUJ impressed, and the Belfast outfit were the first to get their names on the score sheet with two points in the opening five minutes.
It took the home side a few minutes to settle in with their first shot going narrowly wide but soon split the posts with some great work by corner-forward Caoimhe McCrasson.
UUJ stuck another point over the bar before DCU had a goal chance, the sliotar collected and sent in by Mairéad Power to Róisín Baker who just inched the ball over the bar rather than under it.
UUJ reacted and went on the attack again, another point going between the posts before Baker had her second chance to add a goal to her first point but her shot was blocked down by the UUJ goalkeeper and eventually cleared by her backs.
Dublin county player Róisín Collins got her name on the scoresheet a short time later for the home side when she put the resulting free over from a foul on wing-back Eimear Corr.
Jordanstown then had a purple patch and scored five unanswered points with DCU not getting on the scoreboard again until the brink of half-time when another DCU player was fouled, this time full-forward Róisín Baker being brought down in the middle of the park, with Emer Reilly putting the placed ball between the posts.
When the whistle sounded for half-time, it was the Belfast side who went in with their noses in front, the scoreline reading UUJ 0-09 DCU 0-04.
DCU started the second half making a substitute with Ciara Manley going on for Mairéad Power at corner-forward. Both sides then wasted chances before the home side took the game by the scruff of the neck and scored three points on the trot, Baker, McCrasson and Kate Cullen on target for DCU. UUJ weren’t taking it lying down though and replied with four points of their own.
Manager Stephen Behan made another substitution hoping fresh legs would help bring his team back into the game, Muireann Byrne going on for Eimear Corr, who had a great game in the half-back line.
The Dublin side again fought back with a point before a rare error by goalkeeper Emma Kavanagh resulted in a scrappy goal for the Belfast side. The Kilkenny shot stopper went up to catch the ball but just couldn’t hold onto it and it just dropped into the back of the net. The away side then went on to add two more points in quick succession.
DCU’s third goal chance came late on in the second half when centre-back Eimear Brady was found in the forward line from a great ball in by Róisín Baker but her shot just agonisingly going over the bar. Brady had another chance to find the net seconds later but pulled the sliotar just wide of the posts.
Midfielder Emer Reilly had the last say in the game though with a last gasp goal for the home side, leaving the scoreline at 1-15 to 1-07.
Although there are no major injury worries, DCU had ten wides in comparison to UUJ’s four so they will be looking to rectify that and get back to their winning ways in their next league match which is against NUI Maynooth on Tuesday, October 20th.
