This year’s Road Relay Championships were like no other, with a stellar line up and beautiful weather, the Irish Universities Athletics Association Championships were ready for a show, and DCU were ready to perform.
The National Intervarsity Championships were held in Maynooth University last Saturday and DCU had some very strong teams in both the men’s and women’s race.
Due to some very challenging and tricky weather conditions, the course had to be altered to ensure every runner would complete the course safely. Nonetheless, both men and women stepped up to the mark resiliently to defend their previous titles.
DCU finished in the top three in both the men’s and women’s races. The women’s ‘A’ team finished in third position behind University College Dublin and the University of Limerick, with a time of 35:21. This team consisted of Mary Mulhare, Niamh Markham, Ciara Wilson and Maria O’Sullivan.
The men’s ‘A’ team also fought hard for victory and defended their 2014 title successfully. The DCU men’s team, comprising of Cillian Kirwan, Kevin Kelly, Keith Fallon, Pierre Murchan and Cormac Kelly combined in the 1-2-3-2-1 mile format to to triumph in a time of 44:56.
Once again, the future looks bright for DCU Athletics for the upcoming season. “We want to congratulate everyone who competed in Maynooth and pay special thanks to all our supporters who came out in force,” said a club source.
“A special thanks to Enda Fitzpatrick and Anne Buckley for their continuous support in preparation for the road relays and the year so far. Also a big thanks to Bank of Ireland for supporting us in this upcoming season. We look forward to seeing some new and old faces at our next varsity competition in Athlone in January, no doubt bringing home some more medals and trophies!”
