Kevin Donoghue elected as USI President

Kevin Donoghue has emerged victorious in the race to become next President of the Union of Students in Ireland (USI), beating former DIT SU President, Glenn Fitzpatrick, 120 votes to 91.

Donoghue received the backing of delegates from a number of colleges across the country including here, in DCU. He also received the backing of delegates from Trinity College Dublin’s Students’ Union.

Donoghue is the outgoing Vice President for Academic Affairs and Quality Assurance (AAQA) for the USI and will assume the position in June when he takes over from outgoing President, Laura Harmon.

Speaking to The College View shortly after his win, he commended Fitzpatrick on his campaign over the few weeks.

“I’m absolutely thrilled about the result. Glenn ran a good campaign, he was a good candidate but I’m absolutely delighted that they decided to vote for me,” Donoghue said.

“It was a hard fought campaign in terms of the hustings, there was 11 hustings rather than 5 last year. Our objectives were similar enough in terms if what we hoped to achieve.”

“I have to let it (the results) settle in. I’d like to see my reforms implemented as soon as possible. I want it done in the first week. I’m going to have to sit down with the newly elected team and we’ll identify three key areas and start from there,” he added.

The 56th annual USI Congress has been Athlone this week and is due to finish Thursday afternoon.
