Arnotts SS14
We were taken on a tour of the future season’s garments of Arnotts at Smock Alley Theatre when the Irish fashion elite gathered to watch what Spring/Summer 2014 has to offer. An atmosphere including a cool Spring breeze and the warmth of Summer replaced the current harsh cold for one day on the catwalk.
Brands such as Lulu Guinness, LennonCourtney, Clover Canyon and Halston Heritage showcased their take on upcoming SS trends. Colour block outfits and graphic prints appeared to be the key trends. Caffeine aided the Arnotts team who put the event together that began bright and early with a chill in the air. However that chill was soon suppressed by striking mustard’s and bold print accompanied by contemporary accessories.
Speaking of bangles and bags, new to the accessories hall at Arnotts is NY brand Milly. Those who attended the fashion showcase received a goodie bag including a Milly iPhone 5 cover (yes you have the right to envy.) A leather purple handbag with gold plated detailing was another favourite from the Milly collection.
Floaty skirts and floral prints are as usual, a large part of SS14 fashion as Holston Heritage displayed. Sarah Morrissey caused a stir donning a beige Tara Jarmon trench coat down the runway- a key statement piece. Another outfit the model wore was a bright fuchsia blouse with royal blue linen pants accessorised with a neon yellow clutch. LennonCourtney used a sunny yellow for one of their bags also. We all know what colour we’ll be stocking up on next season; let’s hope the weather matches.
The British Fashion Awards 2013
The high profile 2013 British Fashion Awards took place on Monday December 2nd at the London Coliseum. Hosted by comedian Jack ,the glamorous event saw an array of guests take to the red carpet from Donatella Versace and Kate Moss to Rita Ora and Harry Styles.
The style of the night was formal but with a contemporary edge in many cases. Suki Waterhouse stood out from the rest in a youthful, lacy yet slightly daring dress in a lilac shade. Her loosely curled tresses were pulled back to create an effortless but stunning look. A long dainty necklace kept the plunging neckline classy.
Rosie Huntington Whiteley sported the androgynous trend with slicked back hair statement red lips and a colour block suit with a twist.
The same could not be said for another guest at the awards who made a statement for the wrong reasons. Pixie Geldof
wore an unflattering silver strappy dress that did not sit right. The shiny material did not help the situation.
Christopher Kane won the Womenswear Designer of the Year award while British designer brand Burberry won both Menswear Designer of the Year and Designer Brand of the Year. For the third time Nicholas Kirkwood was awarded Accessories Designer of the Year. Harry Styles picked up The British Style Award for embodying the spirit of London through his clothes.
Berry Lips
This Autumn/Winter season the daring bold red lip has been cast aside and replaced with a darker hue-the berry lip. Whether it’s a lip stain, stick or gloss, wearing red of any shade is not for everyone. The statement you make is a bold one adding an air of confidence to your ensemble. The darker reds such as velvety wine and berry tones can be even more of a challenge as they add depth and a richness to your beauty look. Don’t shy away however as there are plenty of versions to compliment every skin tone and this petal stain could be your next big beauty love.
The catwalks of this season saw many designers opt for deep reds, dramatising the models pout.
Once a big trend in the ’90s berry is back with a bang. Both Vera Wang and Zac Posen gave their models either a gothic dark lip or a voluminous berry to accompany their Autumn/Winter designs. Celebrities like Megan Fox, Emma Watson and model Miranda Kerr all walked the red carpet this season donning the comeback colours. In order to get the best result when trying out this trend, prep your lips with a matte (not glossy) lip balm to ensure they are well moisturised. The colour you choose will then sit pretty and not stray from the lip line. Take care to cover any blemishes or uneven skin tone when applying foundation as this is key to creating a stand out lip.
For lighter skin tones choose a red with a blue base. This won’t over power your complexion by being too dark, instead it will give you the perfect winter berry colour. If you have olive or darker skin then a red with a brown base is the way to go. Very dark skin tones can mix a brown or black liner with their colour also to further dramatise the look. For a vintage feel go for romantic, deep hues with purple tones. This trend is not only dramatic but also festive so build your lip colour as the build up to Christmas continues and make an instant impact.
