More than 1,000 jobs were on offer to DCU students and graduates at the recent Accounting, Finance and Law Fair organised by the Careers Service.
Some forty companies, amongst them KMPG, Deloitte, Ernst and Young and Glanbia exhibited at the fair, which took place at the Helix on last Thursday.
Students were presented with an insight into the range of opportunities available to them in their chosen field, with many remarking that the day had made them feel connected to the working world beyond university.
Talented new recruits were sought by employers in the areas of accounting and finance, business, law, technology, science and engineering.
Students also had the unique opportunity to meet with recent DCU graduates now employed at top firms and find out from them the skills and personality traits most sought after by employers today.
“The academic side of things is almost a given at this stage”, explained Ronan Smith of Dublin-based accountancy firm Baker Tilly Ryan Glennon, adding “I think companies are looking moreso at students’ skills and what they’re going to bring to the table”.
Smith feels such events are important because “they give students a full overview of what kind of offerings are out there. People tend to think of accountancy as being very straight-laced and narrowly-focussed but in reality there are a lot of different opportunities on offer”, he explained.
Louise Wedick, a DCU graduate and employee of law firm Matheson, was also amongst exhibitors and said she was very happy with the high calibre of students she met on the day.
The event was organised by DCU’s Careers Service, which helps students translate their skills, attributes, experiences and learning into the jobs marketplace.
