The Royal College of Surgeons last week defended it’s actions over the summer, when six Irish-trained doctors were jailed in Bahrain. The College claims that it’s use of a more “low-key below the radar use of connections” was just as influential on the positive response from Bahrain as out right high profile opposition. The college was criticised by human rights groups and medical and nursing organisations during the summer as it failed to announce a strong stance against the arrests of these doctors, even after an investment by the college of €60 million in a medical school campus in Bahrain.
