Classy UCD have too much firepower for DCU

UCD 5-20

DCU 0-11

DCU remain without a win in the Division 1 senior hurling league after the visit of UCD served only to highlight the gulf in class between the two colleges.

It was a second successive defeat for DCU and consequently, the away game to St. Pat’s is now of vital importance in maintaining their Fitzgibbon Cup place.

UCD, led by the impressive attacking duo of Noel McGrath and Fionan Clabby, were off the mark inside the opening twenty seven seconds and from the moment Kevin O’Loughlin rattled the DCU net in the fourth minute, the South Dublin College looked composed, assured and in control.

Emmet Kent (free) opened DCU’s account in the 7th minute, by which juncture, however, UCD were well on their way to victory, leading 1-7 to 0-1.

Two goals from former DCU ace Walter Walsh pushed UCD further ahead, with JJ Lennon, Peter Gill and Shane Griffith adding to the home side’s tally.

DCU, backed by the elements at the change of ends, made a positive start to the second half with Gill, Alan Griffith and Emmet Kent all finding the target.

That period of DCU dominance, however, was quickly undone, as Noel McGrath picked out the unmarked Ross Kelly and the corner forward was never going to miss just yards from goal.

Brian Flaherty and Brian Ahern posted the DCU response, but it wasn’t long before the home side’s defence was breached for goal number five, Fionan Clabby supplying the finish.

Inevitably, the game petered out as a contest thereafter, with Gavin Muldoon and Peter Gill finding the range for DCU, while Noel McGrath, Fionan Clabby and Kevin O’Loughlin completed the scoring for the winners.
