DCU student Paul Flynn won a place on the prestigious 2011 GAA/GPA All-Star football team.
The Physical Education and Biology student was named at number 12 in the wing half forward line of the team. It is the first time that Flynn has received the award. Flynn was part of the All-Ireland winning Dublin side that also collected five other All-Stars on the night.
These included DCU graduates, Stephen Cluxton (fith All-Star), Kevin Nolan (first All-Star and Bernard Brogan (second All-Star). DCU student James McCarthy was nominated for the Young footballer of the year award but he lost out to Cillian O’Connor of Mayo.
In other GAA news concerning DCU students, Michael Murphy (Physical Education and Biology) has been named as part of the Irish International rules team which will tour Australia this summer.
Murphy is involved with his club, Glenswilly, in the Ulster senior football championship but their next fixture has been postponed to allow the talented forward to travel to Australia.
Colm Begley is due to join up with the panel in the wake of Parnells defeat from the Dublin Club Championship.
Graduates Stephen Cluxton (Dublin), Emmet Bolton (Kildare) and Kevin Reilly (Meath) have also been selected, with Cluxton captaining the team.
Bernard Brogan was due to be a part of the panel but pulled out due to commitments with his club.
Paul Flynn could not travel with the panel as he was ruled out of selection due to injury.
The International Rules team have been training most Saturdays mornings in the DCU Sportsgrounds for the past number of weeks under the watchful eye of Anthony Tohill.
DCU Director of the GAA Academy, Michael Kennedy, will travel to Australia as part of the management team.
