DCU Saints opened their league campaign with a seven point victory over SuperLeague champions UCD Marian.

Pat Glover and Eoin Quill led the way with 21 and 15 points respectively with Quill connecting on three three-pointers. UCD went into the half-time break with a one point advantage but a composed Saints side slowly increased the tempo and to emerge victorious on a 68-61 score line.

It was the first game in charge for head coach David Donnelly. Donnelly was a former player for the Saints and he replaced long-time coach Vinny O’ Keefe. Their next match is away to Galway side Moycullen.

DCU Mercy also got off to a winning start after recording a comprehensive 31 point victory against the Waterford Wildcats. Mercy were in control at the break, leading 33-15. Sarah Woods and Lindsay Peat combined for 32 points as Mercy ran out 68-37 point winners. They play Meteors in their next game.

The DCU men’s college team face DBS in their next game while DCU women’s college team are at home to DIT.

DCU has also been chosen to host the hugely successful Rugby 7’s tournament for the third successive year. No date has been set for the tournament at this time. And in another boost for the profile of rugby in DCU, the Heineken Cup (currently in the possession of Leinster) visited campus on Wednesday for Clubs and Socs day.

DCU will host the first Ultimate Frisbee Intervarsity of the year this weekend. The ever popular event starts at midday on Saturday and will run over the course of two days. DCU enjoyed great success in this event last year and will be hoping they can continue that form at home.
