A total of €635 was raised by DCUfm during their 12 hour charity broadcast last Wednesday.
The broadcast was presented by Sean Defoe and Eoin Sheahan and ran from 10am to 10pm. All funds raised will be donated to Irish Cancer Society, a cause close to Sean’s heart as his own grandfather has the disease.
“Unfortunately it’s something that almost every family has been affected by,” he said. “Everyone in Ireland knows someone who has suffered or died from cancer.”
The sum exceeded the target of €500 set out by the station, which Eoin believed was down to having the broadcast on the same day as the Fresher’s Ball.
“We were told to do the broadcast after Christmas but Sean and I decided it had to be Fresher’s Week. The buzz about the place was brilliant and the Hub was full with everyone queuing for their ball tickets. There was a great atmosphere and donations in turn came flowing in”.
The broadcast featured contributions from a wide range of DCU clubs and societies, including interviews with DCU SVP, the Style Society and DCU RAG. There was also improvisation courtesy of the Drama Society and survival tips for freshers from the Foodie Soc.
“We wanted to make it as much about DCU as possible and to be a celebration of the university as a whole,” Eoin explained.
The broadcast ran smoothly, despite some disasters the night before meaning it was “a bit of a patchwork job”, according to Sean.
“The entire system crashed on Tuesday night. Everything was down, we had to play most of the songs off our friend’s laptop,” he revealed.
The broadcast follows the success of DCUtv’s 24 hour broadcast which raised in excess of €2,500 for Make a Wish Foundation last April.
