DCU TVs Yearly 24-hour broadcast to take place on the 4th and 5th of December in aid of Focus Ireland

Deputy Chief Editor Leonor Selas Amaral

Every year in early December, DCUTV (honorary member of DCU MPS) produces a 24-hour broadcast in aid of charity. This year’s broadcast is set to happen in the Student Union building from 9pm on the 4th of December to 9pm the following night of the 5th. On the 5th of December at 7pm, the broadcast will be joined by a live audience of family, friends, alumni, and Focus Ireland representatives who will have the opportunity to enjoy the show live for its final two hours.

The broadcast is streamed live for the full 24 hours and is fully student-led. TV Managers Sam Kennedy and Sarah Duff have been working exceptionally hard this year to make this year’s broadcast one for the books: “We’re beyond thrilled for this year’s 24-Hour Broadcast; it’s a chance for everyone to see the amount of dedication, passion, and creativity everyone here at the Media Production Society has put into it. We’re going bigger and bolder this year, so we’re hoping we can get as many people involved and as many viewers as possible. Last year we had an amazing turnout, with almost €13,000 in donations and nearly 100 people involved in creating this Broadcast. The lineup of shows this year is really special, and is full of surprises. We honestly can’t wait for everyone to tune in and donate for Focus Ireland, because we really think we’ve created something special here. It’s not to be missed!”

Last year, DCUTV raised an impressive €12,820 for Jack and Jill, and the team hopes to raise a minimum of  €7,000 for the chosen charity partner Focus Ireland this year. Focus Ireland aims to spread awareness about homelessness as widely across Ireland as possible, and provide support for homeless people in Ireland. Robert Kane, former DCU alum and current representative for Focus Ireland, is looking forward to working with DCU TV on this broadcast, and spoke on his own past experience with the event: “I took part in the 24 hour Broadcast while I was in DCU many years ago. It’s a great event and also raises much-needed funds for charities.”

The broadcast will be hosted by four students from DCU’s School of Communications: Jake Dalton (First Year Multimedia), Ailish O’Connor (Second Year Journalism), Ciara Stell (First Year Communications) and Olivia Doyle (Second Year Communications). The hosts are all over the moon with their respective roles and ecstatic to get started. They are honored and excited for the opportunity to present such a lovely broadcast in aid of such a fantastic charity. The broadcast involves several types of content, including pre-recorded shows, live shows, interviews, and advertisements. Shows are all either led by students or committee members, and aim to provide entertainment in aid for charity. Shows will include: Committee Bake Off, Dogs of the Broadcast, Carpool Karaoke and more. Sub-committees such as Tech, PR, Sponsorship and Sets and Props will be working behind the scenes to hone their media skills and ensure a fantastic show.

According to MPS Chairperson Sadhbh O’Grady, “Every year the broadcast gets bigger and better, it also becomes more meaningful for students partaking. It gives students memories that will last a lifetime while also raising money for those who are in need during this time of the year.”

The broadcast will be streamed live on DCU TV’s YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/@dcumps?si=_-MaTfiQbnnUKHdB ). If you would like to donate to Focus Ireland, please do so here: https://www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/MediaProductionSociety12
