Mary Lou McDonald outlined her plans for young people while visiting DCU today. ”If and when” Sinn Féin enters the government, the party leader promised to solve the housing crisis in an effort to keep young people in Ireland, and to bring them back from abroad.
McDonald also promised to work to abolish student fees, similar to Simon Harris’ plan which he spoke about when visiting DCU last week.
McDonald spent more than forty minutes speaking with students and the media outside the U building. The College View asked Ms McDonald about the quick turnaround from the election being called on 8th November to registration closing on 12th, blocking many young voters out. “In my mind, this is your election”, McDonald told The College View as she emphasised the important issues concerning young people that have formed a major part of every parties campaign.
McDonald answered questions on a number of topics during her visit from DCU students, including questions on the viability of a United Ireland. McDonald believes a referendum will be called on the issue within the decade and anticipates students will live “their best years” in an all-island Ireland.
