Wolverhampton Wanderers fullback Matt Doherty has been recalled to the Ireland Squad ahead of the final round of UEFA Nations League fixtures. This follows from injuries sustained by captain Seamus Coleman, Shane Duffy, and Adam Idah, over the past weekend.
Last month, Doherty was not included in Heimir Hallgrimsson’s squad for the two fixtures against Greece and Finland, where the Republic of Ireland picked up their first competitive win in over a year following a 2-1 win away to Finland.
Ireland will look to do the double over the Finnish side this Thursday in the Aviva Stadium, while also looking ahead to Sunday’s game in Wembley against the old enemy, England. England currently sit second in the group behind Greece, who have won all 4 of their Group B games to date.
A win on Thursday is imperative to this Ireland side, who are desperately trying to stay in League B of the Nations League. A 3rd place finish in the group will put them in the relegation playoff. This will take place in the March International break, giving more than enough time for a good start to Hallgrimsson’s first full year of management on the island.
Matt Doherty has 47 caps for Ireland and will hopefully pass his experience to the team ahead of a massive weekend. Along with Doherty, Jake O’Brien of Everton and Southampton’s Ryan Manning were also recalled.
You can watch the Republic of Ireland vs Finland this Thursday, the 14th of November, in the Aviva Stadium or on RTÉ2 from 7:30 pm to see how it all plays out.
