The DCU Sigerson team got their season off to winning ways last week as they claimed a narrow victory over UCD in St Clare’s.

Paddy Christie’s side came from behind to claim victory by a single point in their opening Ryan Cup (Senior Football League) game over the Belfield men. Both sides were without some key players as the club championship season across the country continues at pace.

DCU made the brighter start to the game with Meath man Shane Walsh tapping over some relatively easy opportunities.

Leading early on the home side’s dominance would soon be broken as UCD found the back of the net to reduce the margin to just a point.

There was little between the sides when former All-Ireland U20 Player of the Year, Offaly’s Jack Bryant calmly slotted the ball into the back of the UCD net after a well worked move that had seen Longford second year student Keelin McGann burst forward with his trademark pace and provide for his team once again.

A moment of chaos followed seconds later with the Dóchas Éireann defence seeming to have fallen asleep. Immediately after Bryant had got his goal, UCD also raised the green flag with their player left in acres of space.

DCU went in at the break ahead by a single point but started the second half sluggishly. Momentum began to gradually swing back in the home sides direction, and this was greatly aided by an inspirational score from half-back Jack McGeown of Monaghan.

The second half lacked the quality that was on show in the first period however both sides can be forgiven for that as it was their first outing of the campaign. In a tight last few minutes DCU just did enough to hold on, winning ultimately on a score line of 1-13 to 2-9.

The team return to action as they take on TU Dublin in Grangegorman on Wednesday evening (October 26th) at 7pm.

DCU’s Fitzgibbon hurlers had a comfortable victory over Trinity in their opening fixture, while the Ashbourne camogie team also got off to winning ways beating TU Dublin.

In Ladies Football, DCU’s O’Connor team are in action against Queens University Belfast on Wednesday (October 26th) at 8pm in St. Clare’s.
