This year’s Media Production Society annual 24 Hour Broadcast is in aid of the charity SOSAD.
SOSAD is an Irish suicide prevention and bereavement support charity. The charity has helped many people and families that have been affected by suicide.
Carmel Kenny, a committee member for this year’s broadcast, has been directly affected by suicide.
“I lost my Dad to suicide when I was two years old and I’ve grown up without him in my life. I’ve seen firsthand how it affects everyone left behind. SOSAD is close to my heart because I want everyone to know that they have someone to talk too and can turn to in a time of need,” she said.
The Broadcast involves students being locked in the Henry Grattan building for 24 hours and producing a live-streamed broadcast. Students have the option of making a thirty minute pre-recorded show for the broadcast or producing a show live on the night.
This year they had 140 show submissions and had to narrow it down to 46. Those that tune in on the night can expect versions of shows like Gogglebox, The Late Late Toy Show, Come Dine With Me and many more.
Last year’s target was €5,000 but they succeeded in raising over €15,300 through donations on the night and fundraising beforehand. This year they are setting a target of €7,000 for the night.
“Last year was very special in the sense of the traction that our promo video got. It was incredible. Last year was incredible and I’m not sure we are going to beat it because I think it was a once-off opportunity,” Billy Keenan Chair of MPS said of last year’s success.
DCUtv’s 24 Hour Broadcast in aid of SOSAD runs from 9pm on Friday 1st December to Saturday 2nd of December. To watch live go online to www.dcumps.com and don’t forget to donate to the charity.
