Metropolis, the indoor music festival, took place in Dublin’s RDS over the October bank holiday weekend.
In its third year running, this year’s sold out show saw Jungle, Richie Hawtin and Laurent Garnier headlining. Despite the cancellation of 90’s girl group TLC, the festival proved to be a success among Irish festival-goers.
Previously a three-day festival, this year’s acts were spread over the opening concert on Saturday and the main acts playing on Sunday. Saturday saw the likes of electronic group Death in Vegas take to the Warehouse stage and Papa Lou close the Industries Hall.
On Sunday, crowds flocked to see English band Jungle on the main stage. The festival operates a ‘one in, one out’ system to avoid crowding, and the queue for Jungle was one of the longest of the day Although the band only has one album, their electricity and energy while playing live had the crowd in a trance.
Norwegian DJ Todd Terje successfully closed the main stage, a favourite among house music lovers. Meanwhile, at the Red Bull stage, Mall Grab and Denis Sulta’s techno sounds hypnotised attendees.
One of the most surprising acts of the night was DJ Jazzy Jeff, Will Smith’s partner in crime on the famous Fresh Prince of Bel Air theme song. The veteran DJ played a range of modern and classic hits, from Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Humble’ to ‘Africa’ by Toto.
Irish talent like Booka Brass Band and Le Boom also played on Sunday, following their success at Electric Picnic. Although earlier on in the evening, Booka Brass drew quite the crowd with their rendition of Beyoncé’s ‘Talk Dirty’.
With various stages, a ‘Red Bull Music Academy Conversations’ talk and visual arts exhibition, Metropolis is the winter festival not to be missed. Earlybird tickets for 2018 go on sale soon with more information on their Facebook page.
