Last week’s Strictly Come DCU saw Dance Society members partner with well-known faces around the campus to perform routines in a wide variety of styles including Bollywood, salsa, jive and 80’s disco.
The winners on the night were Accounting student Francine Kwan and his partner, Marketing and Communications Officer Nicola Leddy with their reggae pop routine to Lady Gaga’s hit song ‘Telephone’.
“It was a pleasure working with Leddy Gaga,” said Kwan. “She was very determined to learn all the steps and I couldn’t have been given a better partner. Winning was definitely worth all the bruises from training.”
Fr Joe Jones from the Inter Faith Centre took on a jive routine with his partner, Communications student Laura Ramsbottom. The Grease themed dance proved to be a real hit placing them third in the competition.
Fr Jones said: “I had a great time rehearsing and performing in Strictly Come Dancing. Laura was a brilliant partner. I don’t think there are enough events in DCU that get students and staff not only working together, but having fun together.”
All proceeds from the week went towards the Irish Heart Foundation. Chairperson of DCU Dance, Shauna McGauran said that the reason they chose the Irish Heart Foundation is because of their focus on the importance of exercise for health. “They encourage daily exercise and so do we,” said McGauran.
McGauran went on to say how she thought last week’s Dance Week organised by the society had been very successful. “We got the whole student body and also the staff involved to prove that dance is for everyone.”
The week’s events also included a céilí, a Dance Moms marathon and a dance bomb competition. There were also workshops running throughout the week in a range of dance styles such as line dancing, jazz and ballroom.
