Sustainable Sourcing in DCU’s Style Society’s ‘Magnum Opus.’

‘Magnum Opus,’ Greek for ‘great work,’ is an understatement to describe the unforgettable experience that was DCU Style’s 2026 Fashion Show. From its collaboration with DCU Film to create a cinematographic atmosphere to the carefully compiled outfits that complemented each theme, all you could wonder is how the hell it all came together.

Ellie Dolan, a stylist for the fashion show, highlighted the importance of sustainable sourcing in the fashion industry. “Ethical sourcing is crucial in fashion if you want to have the Earth in a few decades.” She said the show used vintage shops and thrifting as a main source of clothing for the models.

DCU Style’s fashion shows have been running annually since 2005, over 20 years ago. This year, it took place in The Venue in the U-Building in Glasnevin on the 12th of March. The show displayed a variety of looks with something for everyone. Each look told a story through its themes, choreography and, of course, the clothes. The themes for 2026 were ‘A Regal Affair,’ ‘Crybaby,’ ‘Heartthrob,’ ‘Dressed to Kill,’ ‘Poltergeist,’ ‘Ever After,’ ‘The Get Down’ and ‘3026.’

Cost can be a concern when it comes to choosing the most ethical option in fashion. The stylist spoke about the cost of sustainable clothing when keeping up with the always-changing style trends and how it causes a rise in fast fashion for shoppers. “A lot of people cannot afford stylish, ethical clothes from Vinted or vintage stores to keep up with trends and buy from fast fashion brands instead.”

The Fashion Show was funded by the Style Society, DCU Clubs & Societies and the brands that worked with the stylists along the way.

Ellie described the inspiration behind the clothing pieces, taking inspiration from films like ‘Clueless’, ‘The Godfather’ and ‘Scream.’ Her favourite look was ‘Poltergeist’ because of its contrast of dark and light themes compared to the other walks.

She reflected on her favourite moments of the show, her favourite part of it being “meeting new people and seeing the vision come to life.”
