DCU Library has cut all fines for overdue books permanently across all campuses.
The decision was announced yesterday following feedback from the Students Union and direct comments made in recent years.
In a statement to the College View, a spokesperson for DCU library said, “We are aware of the impact of the cost of living crisis on students at this time, so we wish to encourage full access to our print collections and spaces without limits or restrictions”.
They added that “we want to send out a positive message of support to let them (students) know that all library services and print collections are available to them without restrictions or limits”.
Instead of a fee, library accounts will be frozen. Borrowing permissions will return to normal once the book is returned.
Replacement charges for lost or overdue books will remain in place to ensure library collections are maintained. If the book is returned/found fees will be removed.
This was a temporary measure introduced during the pandemic when students were not on campus full-time to have access to library resources.
The library continues to encourage students and staff to make returns within the required time period to provide fair access for everyone.
