The DCU Camogie team put Maynooth away with little difficulty in a one-sided first round of championship game played at St. Clare’s. Though MU put up some resistance through some great defending by corner back Hannah Larkin. The DCU firepower up front,
helped ably by their strong midfield and subs bench, were never going to be stopped.
The DCU full forward line and centre forward Kate Kenny combined for a whopping 5-10 as they looked
utterly unstoppable out there. Aisling Gannon’s hattrick and the brilliance of Kate Kenny, who ran the
show, caught the eye. However, it was the team’s collective brilliance that was most impressive. Séamus
Ó Ceallaigh’s side are well drilled, extremely hard working and highly unselfish, maybe at times even too
much for their own good.
Played on a wet surface with no wind or rain, it was 6 minutes before Ciara O Connor pointed the first point of the game from a free. Maynooth responded with a point from Laura Quinn however disaster struck for them on the 13th minute.
After a poor clearance from Eimear Goland in goals, the ball fell to Kate Kenny who hit a rocket of a shot off her left straight into the top right-hand corner. Gannon grabbed her first goal of the evening 2 minutes later and the game was over by half time, 2-12 to 0-03.
O’Looney pointed the first 2 points of the second half and DCU were in cruise control. The DCU bench was unleashed with Emma Tomkins, Ellen Cunneen and Ciara Butler combining for 1-03.
Despite the best efforts of full back Sonia Leonard and Eibhe Lawlor up front, Maynooth were not able to
handle a DCU side who look posed for bigger and better things.
DCU will play TUD in the next round in January.
