Coming up to the new academic year, a lot of students take up residency in student accommodations to conveniently live closer to college/ university. Though the rooms are efficiently designed for our comfort, it can appear rather stagnant and bland, and a lot of students, especially first years moving into the city, will come to feel homesick.
Many would miss the smell of their mothers kitchen or cosy aesthetic of their rooms at home. So in order to bring some of that hominess into the new homes for the academic year, here are some affordable ways to add decor to your accommodation room Hygge (Hyoo-Gah) style.
Hygge is derived from a word in Danish meaning, a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being. A couple great places to get items from are Pennies and Tiger, both of which are down at the City Centre. They provide affordable and well made products for purchasing. Pennys has lots to offer from throw away pillows to soft rugs to duvet sheets and towels, which could bring comfort and colour to your room, most of which would cost under 30 or 20 euro.
Tiger can provide foldable boxes that can work as a drawer for your shelf, it can make organising your things more easier and when you need to pack it away, it will simply fold flat. This wouldn’t cost more than a few euros and you can get them in any colour or pattern you like.
If you want to give your room a warm romantic atmosphere, get a hold of some fairy lights which normally would cost a fiver. Or if you’re into giving your room a more night club feel, you can get colourful L.E.D lights to hang around your walls, they’d cost normally around 10-20 euros. Another way to create a good feel is through a sense of smell; however with student accommodations, scented candles wouldn’t work without the fear of the smoke alarming blaring through the corridors.
Alternative would be to get incense. They come in many different scents such as lavender, Japanese rose, patchouli, sandalwood and many more. The sticks wouldn’t cost more than a few euros while the stick holder would cost nearly a tenner. So following these little tricks, your room will surely look much more cosier with it’s own lovely warm aesthetic to give us a nice place to come home to when finished with work and classes for the day.
