Capsule wardrobes: Where to begin?

Y ou may have heard the term capsule wardrobe floating around social media recently.

With the weather getting colder and life slowly returning to normal you may be wondering how to stay fashionable on a budget while also thinking about sustainability.

A capsule wardrobe may be just what you’re looking for.

What is a capsule wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a set number of clothes that you can mix and match with anything in order to create a wide variety of outfits.

Where do I begin?

To start a capsule wardrobe, you need to decide on a base colour – usually black or navy, then add your basic pieces – such as a simple white or black top.

You may choose your accent colours – this is what ensures a capsule wardrobe works together, then add a few statement pieces – some patterns or textures and then accessorise.

What are the benefits?

Sustainability is one of the most important factors of fashion in the current climate.

Building a capsule wardrobe allows you to gather numerous pieces that work together seamlessly and are timeless. With a capsule wardrobe, you can find the balance between affordability, sustainability and being fashionable all at once.

Lauren van Aswegen, Head Stylist of DCU Style, shared her top tips on building a capsule wardrobe.

“I would push people to go to H&M and collect good quality basics like vests, t-shirts, tops, and jeans. H&M has great quality pieces and for a good price too.

“They’re also a great way to save your money and not end up spending it on trends that are a throw-away,” van Aswegen said.

Capsule wardrobes prove to be even more environmentally friendly as they can work all year round.

For example, a skirt you might wear in the summer can still be worn in the winter if you just add some tights and a jumper and switch your shoes out for some warmer boots. You save money while also being guaranteed that your style can be quickly adapted to the variable Irish weather.

‘Price is huge when you’re a student!” van Aswegen added.

To show how easy it is to begin a capsule wardrobe, I asked some DCU students on campus what they would consider their ‘go-to’ basics in their wardrobe.

“A good pair of denim jeans or comfortable leggings,” one respondee said, while another added  “white runners, they go with everything.”

Others recommendations included  “a neutral coat”, “a good cardigan” and finally, “boots and gold hoops can really spice up an outfit.”

There is no right or wrong answer to how to start a capsule wardrobe, everyone’s tastes are unique and we all have to start somewhere.

You may already have your base layers in your wardrobe; all you need to do is introduce some complimentary pieces and you’ll have your very own capsule wardrobe before you know it.
