[dropcap]A[/dropcap]ffectionately referred to as “fashions biggest night out,” the annual Met Gala took place on September 13th, leaving fans both divided and confused regarding some of the outfit choices.
With the theme for this year’s Met being “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” attendees were given the creative freedom to work with top designers to bring life to couture that represented the land of the free.
Actress, Lupita Nyong’o went for a denim-inspired Versace dressed defined by a confluence of delicate beading paired with elongated denim panels. She channeled the “all-American” idea perfectly and reminded me of casual 90’s American actresses and models mixed with old Western movies.
However, many were left confused and somewhat disappointed by the idea behind Kim Kardashian’s choice of attire, as she was compared to a “dementor” from Harry Potter.
Sporting a full-bodied, lycra body suit, Kim was covered head to toe , with only her ponytail emerging from the opaque, black head covering. The Balenciaga Haute Couture moment was definitely different to what Kim has produced in previous years, and that’s what I like about it.
At the 2019 Met, she set social media alight as she paired up with French fashion designer, Thierry Mugler and created her infamous “wet look” ensemble. The skin-tight, beige dress took eight months to perfect and brought Met Gala extravagance to a whole new level.
This year, I was definitely confused by her faceless choice at first glance, but as I studied the silhouette of her infamous hourglass figure, I realised her look basically laughs at American society and their way of thinking.
A fan tweeted: “for someone who is always criticized for being overly sexual, Kim showed that she can cover every square inch of her skin and still find a way to be criticized and ridiculed. THAT is American culture.”
Her questionable ensemble requires a little more thinking than Kendall Jenner’s Audrey Hepburn inspired gown or Barbie Ferreira’s pearl-encrusted flapper dress. It’s hidden message about conservativeness is brilliant and not so easy to spot.
Fashion is one of the purest expressions of art and I feel that Kim is an excellent advocate for this idea at every given opportunity.
So whether or not Kim Kardashian understood the assignment for this year’s Met Gala or not, you can’t deny her ability to spark worldwide conversation.
