[dropcap]F[/dropcap]irst year student, Oisín McGovern is running unopposed for the part-time Societies Officer position in the DCUSU elections.
McGovern, who is studying Aviation Management in DCU, hopes to provide better guidance for society treasurers, improve the Clubs and Societies timetable and launch a sponsorship fair, if elected.
McGovern wants to provide more training for DCU society treasurers to teach them what a treasurer does, what their responsibilities are and how to create a budget.
“I was over the last month kind of conversing with committees, and they were giving me the same feedback that if you weren’t a previous treasurer you’re going in there completely blind,” McGovern told The College View.
Through his consultations with committee members, McGovern also heard that many struggled with getting sponsorship as they didn’t know where to go or who to approach.
Therefore, if elected, McGovern hopes to establish a sponsorship fair where societies can pitch their ideas to sponsors and highlight why they should sponsor them. McGovern hopes that he could launch this fair alongside the Clubs Officer, so that both clubs and societies in DCU could have access to sponsorship.
Finally, McGovern wants to improve the calendar used by Clubs and Socs to advertise events as he believes the current calendar is too difficult to find for students.
If elected McGovern will work with Clubs and Socs to try and create a system that makes it easier for students to see when events are on.
Voting for DCUSU elections takes place on March 24th and 25th, information on all candidates can be found at https://www.lead.dcusu.ie/
