DCU Sport wins Sports Complex of the Year 2016

DCU Sport was named Sports Complex of the Year in 2016 for quality management systems at this year’s National Q Mark awards ceremony held in Dublin last month.

The event, which was held at the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel was hosted by Excellent Ireland Quality Association (EIQA), an organisation that audits the standards of thousands of businesses across Ireland.

DCU Sport has been associated with the EIQA since 2009 and have now collected the award on four separate occasions.

Irene Collins, Managing Director of The National Q Mark Awards gave her reasoning behind awarding DCU Sport.

She said: “This award recognises the enthusiasm and commitment that Ken (Robinson), Gemma (Dempsey) and the team in DCU sport strive for every day.

“It’s no surprise that being involved in sport (that) the team in DCU sport are very competitive. This is their ‘All Ireland’.”

DCU Sport operates the sports facilities for DCU students, staff, alumni and local public. They have over 5000 members and a monthly footfall of 65,000. In operation for 11 years, DCU Sport has 41 full and part-time staff they also support over 100 work experience students.

Ailbhe O’Dwyer, a receptionist at the centre, said: “Winning the Q Mark award this year is another reminder of the ever-improving quality and standard of what DCU Sport has to offer.

“The consistency and dedication of the team is reflected not only in the positive customer feedback, but in the atmosphere present in DCU Sport.”

Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar attended the awards ceremony and praised both the initiative and the businesses for helping to heal the country’s economy.

“Quality standards and good governance enables this growth and competiveness and it is exciting to see companies in the public, private and not for profit sectors competing side by side.

“These are the modern Irish businesses that are driving the engine of our recovery, and I wish them every success in the future”.
