DCU forced to settle for a point in CUFL Division 3 opener

DCU’s ‘C’ football team was held to a 1-1 draw away to Cavan Institute on Wednesday, October 7th in its CUFL Division Three opener at the Cavan Astro Park.

The home side went a goal up shortly after half-time, but the goal sparked a comeback in a second half dominated by the Glasnevin side.

Early on, neither side was able to get a foothold in the game as they adapted to the conditions. Both teams struggled to create clear-cut chances, but DCU can be thankful to goalkeeper Christopher O’Donnell for keeping the game scoreless after their rearguard was caught napping after 35 minutes.

A number of tactical changes by the visitors at the interval didn’t prevent Cavan from taking the lead in the 49th minute through Andrew Corcoran, after a mix up in the back-line.

After the restart, there was sudden urgency in DCU’s play as they dominated the rest of the game but the equaliser didn’t arrive until the 65th minute.

The ball fell to Mahmoud Giumaa who lobbed the keeper from 30 yards out. DCU was now in the ascendency, but despite chances for William Dunne, Giumaa and David Tonor, the game ended as a draw.

DCU Team: Christopher O’Donnell; Jose Maria, Daragh McMenemy, Conor O’Sullivan, Kevin Hughes; Mahmoud Giumaa, Ciaran Faherty, Daniel Kayal, David Tonor; William Dunne, Daniel Caulfield.
