Brian Cody accepted his Honorary Doctorate in Philosophy from Dublin City University on Thursday 26th of February in a ceremony in The Helix along with Dr. Pearse Lyons and Dr. Margaret MacCurtain.
The Honorary Doctorate in Philosophy is the highest honour the university can award an individual.
The Kilkenny man who managed the Kilkenny Senior Hurling side to 10 All Ireland Final victories, 12 Leinster titles and 7 leagues is also a teacher by profession.
Commenting on the similarities between his role in the classroom and his role on the sideline, he said: “Essentially, they’re the same in lots of ways. I’m the principal of a school and it’s all about management and leadership as well.”
Cody previously accepted Honorary Doctorates from UCC and Action Coach. Also speaking at the ceremony, Chancellor of DCU Dr. Martin MacAleese, said, “ I hope that in recognising three very distinctive forms of Irish genius, our students will understand that there is no one way, no single path, no pre-drawn roadmap, no one size fits all which lays out their future.”
Dr. Pearse Lyons was awarded the prestigious doctorate alongside Mr. Cody for his outstanding achievements in the fields of science and innovation. Dr. Margaret MacCurtain, has devoted her life to teaching, feminism and as a pioneer of Women’s History advocating for change such as the right to re-marriage after divorce and for the rights of children with special educational needs.
