Two DCU Boxers have been selected to represent Ireland in the European Women’s Championships this summer.
The Irish Amateur Boxing Association has named Céire Smith and Clare Grace part of the five-strong squad. Olympic gold medallist Katie Taylor was also included in the selection for the 2014 Elite Championships which will take place in Bucharest, Romania.
Second year Sport Science and Health student Clare Grace from Callan Boxing Club said that she is thrilled to be a part of the team heading out to Bucharest in May. “It’s a huge honour for me to be on such an experienced team with the likes of Katie Taylor.”
“I’m very lucky to have a scholarship here in DCU and to be part of the DCU boxing club which has done so well this year. I’m thankful to Terry Keegan and all the members of DCU boxing as well as Yvonne McGowan and all in the sports development office”, said Grace.
Céire Smith from Cavan Boxing Club is also studying Sport Science and Health and has just finished her first year. She says it is hard work learning to balance her studies while competing at such a high level but she is enjoying her time here at DCU.
“I’m glad I made the decision to return to university and DCU affords me the opportunity to make use of training facilities that are second to none.”
“Hopefully my upcoming trip to Europe is successful and I would love to return home with a medal for both Irish women’s boxing and DCU”, said Smith.
Speaking to the College View, DCU Boxing Club’s Chairperson Robert Egan described the girls as ‘The pride of DCU Boxing Club.’
“At each and every training session these exceptional young women demonstrate their strength of character, technical proficiency and intense determination, inspiring our boxers and raising the club standard as a result,” said Egan.
“For this, and many other reasons, we are immensely grateful to train with such high-level athletes and we would like to wish both Clare and Céire the very best of luck.”
