DCU Dance was crowned ‘Best Society’ at this year’s Society Awards, which took place last Thursday in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Santry.
Dance Society Chairperson Shauna McGauran described receiving the top honour at the ceremony as “an unbelievable achievement for both our committee and society winners, and a great way to finish off my four years here in DCU”.
Members of the Media Production Society (MPS) also scooped a top award, as their 24-hour broadcast was awarded ‘Best Event’.
Other winners on the night included Friends Soc for ‘Best New Society’, Snowsports Society for ‘Best Poster’, Esoc for ‘Best Marketing and Communications’ and the Raise and Give (RAG) Society for ‘Best Civic Contribution’.
The award for the ‘Most Improved’, meanwhile, went to the Africa Society.
A total of 15 awards were also given to students who had made an outstanding individual contribution to society life.
RAG Soc’s Eoin Lúc Ó’Ceallaigh picked up the prize for ‘Best Fresher’, while Francine Kwan from DCU Dance was chosen as ‘Best Personality’.
The night included guest performances from the Drama, Dance and Music societies as well as a special rendition of ‘Afternoon Delight’ by DCU TV’s ‘Anchor Men’.
Guest presenter for the event was TV and radio star Pat O’Mahony, who co-founded MPS during his time as a student in DCU.
O’Mahony was delighted to mingle with DCU societies once again and told The College View how he was “blown away by the talent on display. You could see the hard work that went into it and the enjoyment everyone got out of it.”
The winners will now go on to represent the University in the Board of Irish Colleges and Societies (BICS) Awards which take place in Belfast on April 10th.
