Move over Jennifer Lawrence, it seems Hollywood only has eyes for one young actress these days;Lupita Nyong’o. The past few months have been a whirlwind for the Kenyan beauty both in the film and fashion world, with A-listers and fashion royalty’s seal of approval under her belt. Only three months into the year, the 12 Years A Slave star is already being hailed as the “It” Girl of 2014, so it’s about time we get the low-down on this rising star. If you don’t know, now you know folks.
Lupita’s “It” Girl credentials include her stunning performance in 12 Years A Slave but also her brilliant ability to wear every single colour and pull it off. Who could forget that vibrant red Ralph Lauren cape dress she wore to the Golden Globes? That, as well as the rest of her red carpet rainbow wardrobe instantly earned her a spot on everyone’s Best Dressed list including E!’s Fashion Police. Impressive.
Thanks to her amazing standout performance in 12 Years A Slave, Lupita has gone from unknown drama student at Yale University to Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner. Before her big Oscars win, she also took home a Screen Actor’s Gild Award as well as a Critics’ Choice Award for her breakout role. Her adorable charm has earned her ‘Hollywood’s Darling’ title with the media and likes of Brangelina singing her praises. She even brought a list of famous people she wanted to meet and get a picture with at the Golden Globes and of course, got them all.
Her acceptance speech at the Oscars was much talked about because of her heartfelt sincerity and elegance. She said: “It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is due to so much pain in someone else’s,” she said in reference to Patsey, the slave she portrayed in the acclaimed film, which was based on a real-life memoir. She also expressed her wish that her story would inspire someone watching at home to go for it — because, as she explained: “No matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.”
A year ago, nobody would have heard of Lupita Nyong’o, but this year her new-found fame has catapulted her into “girl crush” status, and we’re rooting for her. Her grace matches her impeccable Vogue-like style. Along with her trademark look and wardrobe, her exceptional talent as an actress really is something to admire. This poised star is something all girls should aspire to be like with her almost ‘girl-next-door’ vibe that’s guaranteed to steal anyone’s heart. Will her star rise even more? Yes, without a doubt.
