DCU has been named one of the top 50 universities in the world under 50 years old by QS University Rankings.
It ranked 44th and is the only Irish institution to appear on the list. This is the third year in a row the university has made it into the rankings, coming in at 40th last year and 46th the 2011/2012 academic year.
President of the university, Professor Brian MacCraith, told The Irish Times that good international rankings such as this one are vital in creating links with other institutions around the world.
“While funding models for higher education remain uncertain into the future, it is imperative that we look to maximise and leverage the international reputation of Irish higher education,” he told the paper.
In a separate statement on the DCU website, he said the staff at the university were to thank for the ranking, despite facing the adversity of funding difficulties.
“DCU’s inclusion, for the third year running, in the QS Top 50 Under 50, is a welcome recognition globally of DCU as a young, innovative university leading the way in delivering a first-class education for its students and spearheading research with real societal impact. Despite difficult funding circumstances, DCU continues to hold its own on the international stage, thanks to the commitment and quality of its academic and research staff.”
Asian universities dominated the list, with six of the top ten institutions being based there, three of which are in Hong Kong.
