Healthcare recruiters descended on DCU last week for this year’s Nursing Fair. The event, run by the Careers Service and the School of Nursing and Human Sciences, gave potential employers the opportunity to showcase career opportunities to students and graduates of nursing.
Recruiters that exhibited on the day included Children’s University Hospital Temple Street, CPL Healthcare, TTM Healthcare, CCM Recruitment, PCQ Recruitment, and Kate Cowhig Recruitment and Servisource.
The Careers Service delivered a two-hour lecture to final-year Nursing Students in advance of the fair about CV preparation and interview skills. Students then had the opportunity to get their CVs reviewed at the event.
Nursing student Graham Mitchell said that the information he received from the Careers Service prior to the fair was very beneficial.
“I felt that I was well prepared so I was excited to meet the interested employers”, said Graham. “Being able to speak to prospective employers about potential jobs, as well as the dos and don’ts of interviews, is a great advantage for students.”
Talks were also held on nursing opportunities in the Far East, nursing overseas with the intention of coming home and nursing opportunities in the UK.
Students were informed about the time required to up-skill in foreign countries before being allowed to nurse, which in some cases can involve four to six weeks of additional training.
“There are elements of working abroad that are very attractive, for example, there are certain parts of the Far East where students can work tax-free. I would definitely consider working abroad in the future,” said Graham.
“Likewise, there are also a lot of opportunities for students to return home again afterwards with the new Graduate Nursing Scheme,” he added.
Overall, recruiters were very satisfied with the suitability of the students attending the event, as they were with the level of preparation and interest they displayed.
