DCU’s Raising and Giving Society’s recent RAG Rumble event raised over €2000, The College View has learnt.
The annual boxing fundraiser event took place earlier this month in the Venue, where some 15 pairs fought to raise funds for the society’s social projects, which include Operation Paint Ballymun, Go Gaga for GAA and Adopt a Grandparent.
The night consisted of thirteen student fights, an exhibition fight between Seán Cuddy and Sam Rice and a finale showdown between DCU Students’ Union President, Aaron Clogher and Education Officer, Ciarán O’Connor.
“I was really happy about how the event went, we had a good turnout, the boxers were brilliant and we raised loads of money,” RAG’s Events Co-Ordinator Leanne Brolly said.
“The event was really organised, we had a great help from everyone selling tickets, food and drinks as well,” she added, describing the night which attracted some 400 attendees.
Brolly feels the reason RAG Rumble works so well is because students really dedicate themselves to the event, especially the boxers who have been waking up for training at 7.30am twice weekly.
Boxing, she feels, is very popular amongst DCU students; every year RAG have a great number of students signing up to fight in the event.
Awards on the night were picked up by Simon English (Most Dedicated Boxer) and Laura Shields (Boxer of the Night).
