Style is timeless was the lesson to be learnt at DCU Style Society’s Intergenerational event last Tuesday.
The event was held in collaboration with DCU’s Intergenerational Learning Programme and a large portion of the audience travelled from as far as Longford to attend.
Featuring speeches from prominent members of the fashion world; hair and make-up tutorials; and a fashion show, ladies both young and old joined together in a celebration of personal style, fashion and girl power.
Sonya Lennon, host of RTÉ’s Off the Rails said: “Age shouldn’t be a barrier to looking good; We create our own barriers and inhibitions.” How you feel about how you look is the ethos Lennon says all women should live by. “Don’t you feel fabulous when you make an effort?”
One of the attendees Anna McCann, an elderly lady in a fabulous coat, said that she always felt restricted in her personal style because of social expectations.
Helena Ahern, head of DCU Counselling and Personal Development Service disagreed, saying: “Style shouldn’t be about age, money or social expectations; it should be about the freedom to express our authentic selves.”
Guests also heard from vintage boutique owner, Ruth Ní Loinsigh, and eco-fashion designer for the Rediscovery Centre, Carrie Ann Moran, about how to explore your personality through your clothing and breathe a new lease of life into old clothes.
