DCU students failed to break the record for the world’s largest zombie march last Wednesday evening as the event had to be called off due to lack of participants.
The event organised by the Students’ Union, named ‘Slí na Zombie’, was due to take place in Albert College Park. The current world record was set by over 1,550 people in Chicago, USA on June 21st 2008.
SU Welfare Officer, Lorna Finnegan, believes that the zombie march was not a success because it was scheduled on the same evening as the Halloween Ball. “The organising that goes around the Halloween Ball for certain people is that they start getting ready quite early… so I think time could have been the main issue.”
The march was scheduled to take place as a part of an initiative by Student Sport Ireland for mass participation events. The main purpose of the event was to promote exercise and physical activity in an enjoyable way.
DCU SU plan to hold a similar event for Mental Health Week, which takes place from November 11th to 15th. The theme of the week will be Walk in My Shoes and the event will require participants to wear odd shoes as a visual understanding of people with mental health difficulties.
A participant will begin walking or running in darkness and will finish in brightness at a UV wall. The event hopes to promote awareness about mental health and being healthy in mind and in body.
