Efforts to introduce a new Technological University in the South East have stepped up a gear following news of a proposed business outline for 2014.
The Institute of Technology Carlow (ITC) and Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) have announced their intention to submit a detailed business plan for the Technical University to the Higher Education Authority (HEA) early next year.
A key recommendation of the programme is the establishment of a multi campus Technical University. It is expected this will play an important role in maintaining the infrastructure needed to ensure sustainable economic development in the South East region.
Colin Browne, a graduate of WIT and ITC, has been appointed Senior Director of Online Operations with Microsoft Ireland to the Project Implementation Board.
Speaking at a meeting of the Implementation Board, Mr Browne said: “I look forward to working with the board to develop and implement our plan to create an enduring and important asset for the South East.”
Upon establishment, the new South-East University will operate campuses in Waterford, Carlow, Wexford, and Kilkenny.
It will have over 15,000 students and will be worth an estimated €250 million to the regional economy, employing over 1,300 staff.
