DCU boxer Robert Egan took home a gold medal in the recent Leinster Championships thanks to a stunning final bout in the 71kg category.
After being out of the ring for four months, Egan produced three comprehensive victories on his way to picking up the title for the college.
The boxing club was represented by four fighters and was the only university club present. Stiff competition came in the form of Leinster’s very best clubs.
In the final fight Egan fought cautiously, keeping his opponent at a distance and using his jab cleverly. As he began to grow in confidence Egan began to land some heavier blows to the head and body, mainly courtesy of a strong left hook.
This emphatic first round seemed to knock the stuffing out of his opponent, Konrad Korzeniowski of Port Laoise Boxing Club, and Egan maintained control to romp home to victory.
In the 60kg and 64kg categories DCU were represented in the semi-finals. John Quigley came undone against the technically excellent southpaw Pierce Burke of Naas Boxing Club in the 60kg category. In the 64kg category Terry Keegan almost fought back from a knockdown in the first round to take his place in the final, but was defeated by the eventual winner, Dermot Lawless.
Eoghan Rafferty of DCU was also beaten by the eventual winner in the quarter-final of the 75kg category.
It is a testament to the hard work of coach Derek Ahern to get all of the boxers ready for the tournament in a short period of time and the good performances are surely a sign of things to come from DCU Boxing Club for this year.
