DCU’s C1 handball quartet emerged victorious in the ‘C’ plate decider at the recent 40×20 team’s intervarsity in Wexford.
The team comprising of Conor Callaghan, Peter Brennan, Marina Kilduff and Niamh Farrell defeated UCD’s C2 line-up on a final scoreline of 94-67.
The quartet were the only DCU outfit to taste success with the pairing of Niamh Farrell and Marina Kilduff coming tantalisingly close, losing out to UCD in the final of the Ladies ‘B’ doubles. Keeley Earley and Ciara Maddock were also unsuccessful in their respective category, going down to UCD by 21-0, 21-0 in the final of the Ladies’ ‘B’ doubles plate.
In all, 17 DCU handballers competed in various singles and doubles events at the tournament. The college’s A1 handball quartet consisting of John Horgan, Peter Hughes, Terry McElvaney, and Paudie McKenna were unlucky in their defeat at the hands of WIT in the semi-final. Their A2 compatriots however, managed to go one step further in reaching the ‘A’ team plate final, outright victory though was not forthcoming as IT Carlow grabbed the win on a final scoreline of 80-75. John Walsh, Conor O’Gorman, Alan Griffith and Ciaran Neary completed the line-up of the defeated A2 team.
Overall, DCU, despite only winning one category, enjoyed a moderately successful weekend with a number of medals attained, in comparison with many of the other colleges. The next intervarsity on the college handball calendar is the Singles 40×20 Intervarsity in Kingscourt, Cavan, which takes place from January 31 to February 3, 2013.
