Men of DCU, it is that time of year again, so put away your razors and start rooting out your miniature combs, because we have now entered November and it is time to get a MO-ve on.
Yes, it is Movember so get ready to start seeing a moustache sprouting on the face of every second male on campus.
This hilarious campaign is done in order to raise awareness and much-needed funds for male health, specifically prostate cancer.
From November 1st, every Mo Bro began his hairy journey with a completely clean-shaven face and now he must let his moustache grow in all its glory for the duration of the month.
However, there are rules involved. You are not allowed join your Mo to your sideburns (this is considered a beard), nor are you able to join the handlebars to the chin (this is considered a goatee).
Indeed, the only hair you are allowed to have on your face is directly underneath your nose.
Ladies can get involved too. A Mo Sista is a woman who supports her hairy male friends on their journey, helping their Mo Bros to raise money.
Last year, movember.com had over 852,000 people across the world raise an incredible €92.4 million, making 2011 the most successful fundraising year to date.
In Ireland, the funds raised are donated to Action Prostate Ireland, an initiative run by the Irish Cancer Society and used in areas of awareness, education, survivorship and research.
Adam Higgins, Deputy News Editor of The College View, along with four of his friends, has decided to ‘bite the bullet’ and join the campaign. “We were talking about it for a while and we finally made the decision on Halloween night. I’ve never let the Mo grow before and of course it’s going to look ridiculous but that’s all part of it. It’s useless asking people to sponsor you for looking good. You have to sacrifice something.
“The four of us are doing different styles too; there’s the Ned Flanders, the handle-bar, the arrow and the classic Italian. It’s all for a bit of fun and hopefully we’ll raise a few quid for charity in the process.”
