DCU will look to maintain their perfect start to the season when they take on IT Blanchardstown on Wednesday afternoon. After comfortably winning their first two ties against UCD and Coláiste Íde, DCU currently lie in second place of the CUFL Premier Division East behind Dublin IT on goal difference.
Unfavourable weather conditions should be mitigated tomorrow by the all-weather surface in Blanchardstown, and in turn will most likely not hinder the flowing football that has been a hallmark of DCU’s campaign thus far.
If DCU have sewn up the minor issues which vexed them last time out entertaining Coláiste Íde, it could be a long afternoon for the hosts, who have won one and lost one, against Coláiste Íde and Dublin IT respectively.
Additionally, if the brothers Gaul, Robbie and David, Stephen Traynor and Michael Isichei continue in their current vein of form it is difficult to imagine too many teams that would not find this side a handful.
Having scored six and only conceding a solitary goal, DCU are generating all the right statistics, and with a win Wednesday, qualification for the knock-out stages should be, notwithstanding mathematic anomalies, a formality.
Soccer Development Officer Fran Butler attributes this perfect start to the new coaching ticket of Declan Roche and John Russell. “Declan and John have come in and I think the boys have really responded well to them; they have brought in a little bit of professionalism, which is needed.”
He is adamant that this standard must be sustained from here on out: “We need to develop a culture similar to what the GAA have in DCU, of a winning mentality, doing what is needed and preparing properly for games. I think we need to get that, so we’re in a position that it filters through all the teams,” he said.
