Superfood of The Week: Kale

Kale is a food that many people have not heard of yet.

Kale comes from the cabbage family and it is actually on par with broccoli at how good it is for you. Award-winning nutritionist Gillian McKeith regards Kale as one of the healthiest foods available. Kale is an excellent source of nutrients especially calcium.

If you are lactose intolerant or like to stay away from dairy products, Kale gives you all the calcium you need to stay away from osteoporosis when you get older. In a single serving of Kale there is 192% of our recommended daily intake of Vitamin A which can act as a preventative to lung disease. One of the main super food qualities than is desirable in Kale is its abundance of phytochemicals. These are associated with helping decrease the risks of cancer and helping repair cell damage.

Kale can be used as a substitute for lettuce in sandwiches or another popular way of consuming Kale is through smoothies or fresh juices. Here is a recipe where Kale makes this smoothie stand out from others in terms of taste and texture.

1 banana
5/6 leaves of Kale
Handful of grapes
Low fat yogurt
Peach juice
