DCU’s senior football side have received an extremely favourable draw ahead of next year’s O’Byrne Cup, which gives the North Dublin College more than a sporting chance of making the semi-finals come January 22nd.
Niall Moyna’s side will play Wicklow in their O’Byrne Cup opener on January 8th and, although DCU must travel to Aughrim for the fixture, victory is well within their grasp.
Under new management following the departure of Mick O’Dwyer, this will be Harry Murphy’s first test with a Wicklow squad who haven’t tasted competitive inter-county action since their championship exit to Armagh some six months ago.
Should DCU prevail, they will receive a home draw for the quarter final tie against either Longford or Athlone IT.
Meanwhile, DCU’s hurlers will play Fingal in the opening round of the Kehoe Cup on Sunday, January 22nd. No doubt Paul O’Brien and his management team will be using the fixture in preparation for their Fitzgibbon Cup campaign.
The winners of this tie will advance to the quarter final where they will face Meath.
Finally, the senior camogie team begin their quest for Purcell Cup honours this evening when they play host to reigning champions Queens University Belfast.
Today’s championship opener is a repeat of last season’s Purcell Cup final which Queens won by a margin of six points. DCU’s second game is away to Cork IT on February 8th, with DCU having already travelled to Cork for a league fixture only a couple of weeks back, claiming the spoils on a final scoreline of 0-18 to 1-11.
A date has yet to be fixed for the Division 1 league final where DCU awaits the winners of UL and UUJ.
