Students were offered the chance to sign up to DCU’s clubs and societies in the Hub last week and with over 150 to choose from, there was something for everyone ranging from Badminton to the Japanese Society.
The Students Union covered the cost of one sign up for each first year student. “This is our way ofencouraging you to make the very best you can from the extra-curricular life on campus” said Student Union President, Ed Leamy.
There was a great atmosphere on both days with music, free goodies and an ice cream van enticing students to get involved in a club or society.
Students could also get their picture taken with the Heineken cup or play computer console games if they wished.
” I joined the Go Karting, Pool and Snooker Societies. The day was really well organised and good craic everyone one was so helpful, some people harassed me to join a club or society but in a nice way” said Conor CA1.
While Eoghan JR2 said “Clubs and soc’s day was excellent this year, there was a real buzz in the hub and venue, loads of stalls and no doubt, everyone’s interests were catered for”.
Some clubs and societies that are using non DCU email addresses have said that they would benefit from a DCU address as it would help them to link up with different universities worldwide for inter-varsities and other events.
Many of DCU’s clubs and societies are planning charity events for the upcoming year.
One of DCU’s newest societies for 2011/2012, DCU Raising and Giving Society, is dedicated to raising funds for five chosen charities and is the first of its kind in Ireland.
The society recruited over 500 students with many first years using their free sign up.
On the DCU RAG Facebook page it says, “We want to get DCU students directly involved in raising money for worthwhile causes through a range of fun and creative ways.”
AIESEC, the world’s largest student run organisation were also looking for volunteers to join their new DCU branch. “AIESEC offers young people the opportunity to be global citizens, to change the world, and to get experience and skills that matter today.”
The Rugby Society and ESOC, ‘DCU’s Best New Society’, are currently planning Movember. The event encourages men to grow moustaches during the month of November to raise money for prostate cancer.
DCU Media Production Society, ‘Ireland’s Best Society’ is also planning another 24 hour live broadcast during the year.
