DCU’s ‘Surf n Sail’ club have presented a cheque for over €800 to the Howth Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).
Over 30 students from the club braved the frosty waters of Balscadden Bay near Howth for a charity swim in aid of Howth RNLI on December 12th.
“We decided to raise money for the Howth RNLI because we are all water users and wanted to show our appreciation for those who would be rescuing us if anything was to happen. We are a water sports club so it made perfect sense for us to support a water-based charity”, said Grace Newport, Secretary of DCU Surf n Sail.
The Events Organiser for the club, Shane Griffin, who took part in the charity swim, was delighted with the turnout.“It was absolutely freezing. It was fantastic to see so much support and it all ran so smoothly with a great group of people, we were delighted with how much we raised”, he said
“The funds raised by the students in DCU will go towards our current fundraising project to fund the running and maintenance costs of the lifeboat station for a week,” said Howth RNLI Fundraising Chairperson Rose Michael.
Since its inception in 1824, the RNLI has saved more the 140,000 lives and depends completely on charitable donations.
