By the end of today, day two of the 99th Collingwood Cup, all four quarter-finals will have been decided and the list of potential winners will have once more been cut in half.
In the morning games, all four teams who were given byes from the first round will be in action. In a repeat of last year’s final Mary Immaculate College play champions, UCD, while hosts, UUJ, take on the Royal College of Surgeons.
In the afternoon, UCC, who beat NUIG yesterday by 2-1; battle Queens, who knocked out Trinity in a razor-thin 1-0 victory. A victory today could potentially resurrect what has been a poor season for both sides thus far; in the CUFL Premier Division UCC finished second from bottom and Queens were dead last in their respective groups.
Also at 2 30, DCU and NUI Maynooth will compete for the final spot in the penultimate round. Maynooth had a strong first day showing with a comfortable 3-1 win over UL, with Jamie Airey netting a brace and Eoin Markey scoring the third. It has been a less than stellar season for Maynooth up until now. They could only manage a fourth place finish in the Premier Division West, so DCU should be considered the favourites.
The squad had a recovery session last and is reporting no injuries after yesterday’s bruising encounter with UU Magee. Robbie Gaul’s ankle injury, which prevented him from playing against Magee, is still being monitored and a decision on his availability for selection will not be made until the 11th hour.
In the day’s other fixtures, UL have been drawn against UU Magee and NUIG with Trinity in the semi-final of the Spillane Cup.
