DCU Students’ Union are to hold their own Constitutional Convention over a number of weeks this semester.
DCU SU President, Paul Doherty confirmed to The College View the SU plan to hold their own in line with the National Constitutional Convention of Bunreacht na hÉireann. The meetings will take place over 5 weeks; during weeks 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11.
Doherty said they will be announcing the specific topics to be discussed at each meeting this week. The ten topics were decided following the Constitutional Convention survey run by the SU last year.
It’s expected that issues to be discussed during the meetings include a secular Ireland, same-sex marriage and adoption, abortion, the Seanad, the Presidential term and the voting age as well as many more.
Doherty told The College View that as well as the specific topics, the SU hope to bridge into other issues by having open discussions.
Several speakers are lined up for the meetings, however Doherty would not disclose any information as they will be confirming the majority of them this week. Both staff and students are being encouraged to take part in the meetings.
