DCU has been named the best university in Ireland to study in, according to a new European-wide university ranking system.
U-Multirank, assesses the performace of 879 education institutes across Europe on five separate indicators; research, teaching, international orientation, regional involvement and success in knowledge transfer via partnerships with business and start-ups.
Under the scheme, which also takes account of feedback from 60,000 students, more than 1,000 faculties and 5,000 study programmes from 70 countries are also marked on a range of activities and each assigned grades from “A” (very good) to “E” (weak).
DCU received 18 As placing them in the top 10 per cent of institutions across Europe.
DCU was not the only Irish university to fair well in the rankings with UCC, NUIG and CIT all ranking within the top 10 per cent. DIT received eight As, Trinity College Dublin received seven As with UCD receiving four As.
Minister for Education, Ruairí Quinn has hailed the ranking system as a success saying Irish universities and institutes have been “punching above their weight” for years.
Androulla Vassiliou, European commissioner for education, culture, multilingualism and youth, has said that the ranking will “enable students to make more informed decisions about where to study and give us a more accurate picture of how universities perform.”
The ratings come following the failure of any Irish university to make it into the top 100 universities WRR global college league table.
