The start of a new academic year has seen the introduction of numerous new societies at DCU, including DCU’s very own Flag Football club.
Flag Football is a non-contact variant of American Football where tackles are made by grabbing flags off of other player’s hips rather than physical force.
The sport has grown rapidly in popularity due to its inclusivity for people of all genders and abilities so it comes as no surprise that the sport is now offered to all DCU students.
The club, set up by DCU student Anthony Ibe, already has over 30 members in its first month of establishment. The club has labelled themselves as the “DCU dogs.”
When asked about his decision to create the club, Ibe said “I made it a goal of mine from March 2026 to make a club and chose the path of Flag Football because it was easier to coach, way more fun and gender inclusive, that was a big thing for me.”
Training takes place twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4pm – 6pm.
The sessions are categorised into three different groups; mens, womens and mixed.
On Tuesdays each group has a one hour slot, on Thursday it is solely mixed training for the entire duration of the two hours.
The club hosted its first event on September 17th where a one-on-one tournament was set up, with a fifty euro cash prize for the winner. The club is now beginning preparations for an upcoming tournament this November.
The club is highly encouraging all DCU students to participate and join the club, regardless of their skill level. Ibe, who is also the chairperson and head coach of the club, said “I would encourage people to join because it’s not only a sport I am trying to create, I am trying to create a community, a family aside from education.”
“This game relies much on teamwork and like I mentioned it’s a mixed sport, anyone can come and have so much fun.”
